IN CHARACTER
Name: Marian Hawke
Canon: Dragon Age
Canon Point: In between Act 2 and 3 in Dragon Age 2
Age: Mid to early-late 20’s. My best guess would be around 28.

History:
Since Hawke is a malleable character based on player choice here are the major choices that I went with for this Hawke’s personality
-Sarcastic/Humorous/Purple Personality
-Mage Class
-Recruited all companions except Sebastian (because I haven't bought his DLC whomp)
-Carver recruited into the Grey Wardens
-Romanced Isabela but chose the "let's keep it casual" option
-Fought the Arishok one on one for Isabela
-Remained Neutral in the initial argument between Meredith and Orsino
-Completed all companion quests but ultimately refused to help Anders sneak into the chantry
-Helped Tallis in the Mark of the Assassin DLC
-Fought Corypheus in the Legacy DLC
-Helped Anders gather materials but did not help him sneak into the chantry
-Killed Anders
-Ultimately sided with the Mages
-Generally was friends with most of her companions

Hawke also completed (or will complete) all companion quests by:
-Getting Aveline together with Donnec
-Let Merrill finish the Eluvian and told the Dalish to stand down
-Let Fenris kill his former master and sister
-Helped Anders get potion ingredients but refusing to help him sneak into the chantry
-Spared Isabela from the Arishok and killed Castillion

Personality: Hawke is a woman who appears to be constantly amused at the state of the world, no matter how terrible it might be in any given moment. She’s always prepared with a quip or a comment to throw out in the middle of a serious conversation or battle. Sometimes to the point where it’s inappropriate and her comrades reprimand her for it. But considering all the crazy things that she has to deal with, maybe it’s best that Hawke is the sort of person to take things in stride with can what best be described as “resigned amusement” or else she might truly go bonkers. Sometimes people don’t seem to quite understand where she’s coming from, but she’s undeniably charming in how she goes about it. Hawke’s sarcastic and yet charming nature is a boon in her mad adventures as she’s often able to convince people to stand down or avoid a fight just on the basis of her charisma.

And despite her strange sense of humor and desire to quip at inappropriate times, Hawke sees herself (and honestly sort of is) the straight woman to all of the madness around her in the city of Kirkwall. She is genuinely amused at everyone coming to ask her for help and wonders how she came to lead a merry band of misfits that constantly ends up in such dramatic situations. The answer is that, despite her insistence that she doesn’t want to get involved with other people’s messes, is that she seems willing to constantly get involved with other people’s messes. It’s a bit of a funny addiction. Hawke rarely turns anyone down for a request for help and then spends the entire quest wondering how the hell she got into this situation and how many people they’re going to need to kill this time before the whole mess is over and so on.

Hawke is especially willing to shoulder the problems and burdens of her closest friends. And considering her friends are a ragtag bunch of weirdos with lots of issues, this seems to happen often. She genuinely wants them to be happy and will defend them against those who oppose them by insisting Fenris isn’t a slave and that Merrill isn’t someone for the Dalish to fear.

Because she trusts her friends, Hawke strongly believes that they know best as to what to do with their own lives. When getting wrapped up in their problems, she usually defaults to her friends’ opinions and lets them solve the problem how they think is best even if Hawke herself doesn’t agree. For example, she lets Varric keep the lyrium idol at his insistence as well as helps Merrill fix the eluvian because Merrill believes it’s something important, despite the fact that Hawke thinks both of them are dangerous to get caught up in. She just doesn’t think that it’s her place to tell them she knows better about their own lives. (Note: There is actually a game mechanic that in certain situations allows Hawke to allow a companion to speak up or make a decision if it relevant to them, I consistently chose this option in the game to create this personality point as well as usually going along with the choice that the companions say they want to do).

Of course, she has her limits and won’t always help if she doesn’t believe that people are being honest with her and she doesn’t tolerate anyone who is needlessly cruel or only cares about their own power or status. This is why, after Anders blows up the chantry, Hawke knows she has to kill him. She knows that he wants to die a martyr but also that allowing him to live will create further conflict. Hawke doesn’t want to kill her former friend but believes that the person she once knew is gone and now she has to deal with him like all the other criminals who tried to hurt people in her city. In her head, it is what must be done and any other option would cause even more chaos. When it comes down to it, Hawke prefers to cut the problem off at the head (sometimes literally), and be done with it quickly.

And all though Hawke herself says that “helping people and killing people” is what she’s best at, she shirks away from real responsibility for most of her time in Kirkwall. She might be a mage and think that Meredith is crazy and the Templars abusing her power but aside from making sure she and her friends don’t get caught, Hawke doesn’t feel the need to do much to shake up the status quo. It would be great if things changed for mages, but she doesn’t see why she has to be the one to do it. She likes being notorious and revered for her skills in a fight and ability to get a job done and doesn’t see the need to have any more power than that. She just wants to live her life as she wants and doesn't want to make herself the head of any movement or in charge of any real position.

Unfortunately for Hawke and her attempts at avoiding responsibility, a fight with a horde of Qunari to save her friend ends with her being declared Kirkwall’s champion ( though Hawke jokes that “The Only Sane Woman in Kirkwall” was also considered). It’s a strange turn of events considering, initially all of her goals were always narrowly focused on her family and keeping them from starving. The role of her family’s protector was thrust upon her as the eldest and in a cruel twist of fate, as she lost most of her family, she gained Kirkwall and all it’s messiness and bad luck to shoulder instead. And instead of running, even as much as she might want to, Hawke puts a smile on her face and bears it. She does her best to help people in the city and protect it from any outside forces that wish to harm them.

Unfortunately, the reality is that Kirkwall was doomed from the start and there was nothing that Hawke could do to save it from the internal destruction that arose from the Mage Rebellion. Her former friend, Anders, sets off a bomb in the city church and the subsequent toxic fallout and chaos cripples the city. It became the final point on the list of what Hawke considers her list of failures, along with the loss of her Mother and her siblings. The regret and shame over the loss of her family and the subsequent loss of Kirkwall haunts Hawke, even if she tries to put on a confident front.

To make matters worse, in the sequel, Dragon Age: Inquisition, it is revealed that Hawke fought but failed to kill Corypheus, the former Tevinter Magister that causes the breach and threatens the entire world. It’s another point on Hawke’s increasing list of failures. Also in Inquisition, a demon called Nightmare taunts Hawke about her how nothing she ever did mattered and she was never able to help or save anyone, especially her own family. Hawke’s friend Aveline also implies that she knows that Hawke’s constant state of silliness and sarcasm is a way to deflect from the sadness and pain she feels over the losses she’s endured. Indeed, while Hawke’s irreverent attitude helps get her through the day, it also works as a shield from having to deal with any of her darker feelings and makes it hard for anyone to get to really get to know her beyond the surface.

Ultimately, Hawke, despite maintaining her sarcastic attitude, hopes to find redemption for her failures in Kirkwall. This is why she tries to investigate the Grey Wardens for the Inquisition and why, when faced with an impossible fight, is willing to sacrifice herself in the fade for the hope that the Inquisitor and Grey Wardens will be able to stop Corypheus after she failed. Hawke might joke that she is selfish and uncaring about anything greater than herself, but she fundamentally cares about world and her effect in it.

Abilities/Skills: Hawke is a mage which means through the power of the fade, she can control the elements and shoot fireballs, create ice, give herself rock armor and various other abilities. However, because mage’s powers are dependant on their connection to the fade, I figure that Hawke’s magic would be weakened to a more manageable level, especially since there are no enemies such as Templars who can mitigate the power of a mage. Essentially, my suggestion would be that her powers are weakened and at times fail to work right away due to The Moira being a world away from the fade. Also if she lacks a staff, magic becomes more difficult to wield and use in combat against specific targets.

Here is a more in depth look at mage powers if you are interested. Hawke’s specialty is a force mage.

[Hawke fiddles with her MID before it finally flicks on. She’s no technological genius being from Thedas but hey, it’s obviously a point of communication.]

Oh. Look at this thing. Thankfully who every kidnapped us decided to give us all a nice way to communicate with each other and learn each other’s faces. Nice of them. Usually, kidnappers just shove you into a cell with a sock in your mouth to shut you up. Talking is a privilege!

[For someone who is considering herself kidnapped, she certainly sounds… amused at the concept. And she is. Or at least so bewildered that it’s turned into amusement because there’s no other way to deal with it. Which is… pretty normal for Hawke.]

Though, I’ve got to ask, exactly who am I being kidnapped by? Because I know “Champion of Kirkwall” sounds like a fancy title but really it mostly involves a nice shiny medal and a really boring feast in your name. I’ve got nothing to offer anyone here, I’m afraid. Especially because if I’m here and not in Kirkwall, things are going to get pretty ugly pretty fast. Or… uglier. Kirkwall’s always got a bit of the uglies.

So if anyone could point me in the direction of the kidnappers, that would be wonderful. I have words for them. In quotes. Because really, I’m mostly just going to try to fight my way out of this wonderful metal thingy.

Much appreciated!
